Nuclear Power is NOT the answer to Climate Change !
The UK’s big six electricity suppliers are all in the mix to build new nukes
The big six UK electricity suppliers are all reportedly interested in building new nuclear power stations in the UK.
British Energy says it has been inundated with offers to join it in building new reactors. Chief Executive, Bill Coley, said he had been contacted by more than 10 companies wanting to help it build a new generation of nuclear plants. British Energy will announce early in 2008 which companies it would like to form partnerships with for the construction of new plants.[1]
The companies which are contenders to build new nuclear power plants in the UK include EDF Energy (part of the French nuclear utility EDF), E.On and RWE (the German giants that own Powergen and npower respectively) and British Gas group Centrica, which is understood to be working with Scottish and Southern Energy. [2]
EDF Energy (which owns what used to be London Electricity, Eastern Electricity, Seeboard Energy in the South East and the supply arm of SWEB Energy in the South West) says its plans to build a series of four new nuclear plants in the UK. The first plant is expected to be complete by the end of 2017. [3]
Areva, the French nuclear construction group, says it has signed up six companies as possible users of its EPR design, including EDF, E.On, RWE, and Iberdrola, owners of Scottish Power.[4] Iberdrola is negotiating the creation of a 50:50 joint venture with British Energy to build a nuclear power plant in southern England.
